Breastfeeding tracker app: log left, right and notes

A breastfeeding tracker app lets you log each feed by side, so you don't have to remember at 3am. In Milkstop, you tap Left, Right or both, switch sides mid-feed, and add a note if you like. Your partner sees the same log once it syncs when you're online with the app open. Milkstop is free to use.

We make Milkstop, so weigh our view accordingly.

What a breastfeeding tracker should do

Whatever app you use, a few things make a breastfeeding log easier to live with in the early weeks:

  • Side for every feed. Left, right, or both, recorded with the feed itself so you can scroll back and check.
  • A place for a short note. Anything you want to remember about that feed, in your own words.
  • Duration if you want it, not because you have to. Some parents like to record how long a feed went. Others just want the side.
  • One log for both of you. If a partner is doing nappies and bottles, it helps when everything lands in the same place.
  • Works without signal. Hospital wards and dark bedrooms aren't known for good reception.
  • A way to get your data out. An export you can keep or share.

Logging a breastfeed in Milkstop

  1. Start a feed from the dock at the bottom of the screen when a breastfeed begins.
  2. Choose a side. Tap Left or Right.
  3. Switch sides if you change. Tap the other side's button, and Milkstop keeps track of both.
  4. Tap Stop when the feed's done. The timer ends and the sheet opens already filled in.
  5. Add a note if you want. Breastfeeds have a feed note for anything you want to remember.
  6. Tap Save. The feed appears in your history with its side, for example "Breast 12m • Left". See who logged each entry in your history.

Forgot to log one? Tap the + button in the centre of the dock to open the "New entry" sheet. Pick Feed, then Breast, set the "Date" and "Time", and tap "Save". You can log past times, but not future ones. To change an entry later, open it and the same sheet appears as "Edit entry".

Have twins? With two or more babies in your household, the new-entry sheet has a "Recording for" picker, so each feed goes to the right baby. See how to track twins in one baby log.

Duration is optional

You can log a breastfeed with notes or with a duration, whichever suits you, or save it with just the side. On the entry sheet, "Breast Side (Tap both for both)" lets you pick Left, Right or both.

Notes after a feed

Feed notes are for breastfeeds, including mixed feeds that include breast. Keep them short and in your own words. For ideas on what to jot down, see what to write after a feed.

Sharing with your partner

Your partner joins your household with your invite code and their own sign-in. In Settings, under Family & Household Management, copy your Caregiver Invite Code and send it to them. From then on you both log to the same record. See who logged each entry in your history.

Entries sync when you're online with the app open. Your partner can pull down on the log to refresh, or reopen the app, to see your latest feeds. Our guide to sharing a baby log with your partner has the full steps, and if you're working out who does what overnight, see how to split night feeds with your partner.

Night feeds

There's a dark mode for night feeds. In Settings > Display > Appearance & Display, set Display Theme Mode to System, Light or Dark. You can keep logging without signal, and entries sync when you're back online with the app open. See how offline logging works.

Expressing and bottles too

Expressing sessions have their own entry type, so you can log them alongside breastfeeds.

Bottles of expressed milk or formula go in the same log, so combination feeding sits on one timeline.

Milkstop is a personal log, not medical advice. If you have questions about feeding, talk to your midwife, child health nurse or lactation consultant.

FAQs

How do I remember which side I fed on last?

Log the side with each feed. Your history shows the side on every breastfeed, for example "Breast 12m • Left", so you can check the last one.

Can I log a feed without timing it?

Yes. You can save a breastfeed with just the side, or add a note instead of a duration.

Can my partner see my breastfeeds?

Yes. Anyone in your household sees them once the app syncs when you're online with the app open. They can pull down on the log to refresh or reopen the app.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Entries save on your phone and sync when you're back online with the app open.

Can I export my feed log?

Yes. Tap Export to save your records as a CSV spreadsheet or a printable PDF, one baby at a time.

Is Milkstop free?

Yes. Milkstop is free to use, with no subscriptions and no feature paywalls.
